Top foods linked to cancer risk
The International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies substances by how certain the evidence is that they cause cancer — not by how much they raise your risk. That distinction matters, so here is both.
Ranked by strength of evidence
- 01Processed meat — Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans)
Each 50 g eaten daily is associated with roughly an 18% higher rate of colorectal cancer at population level. Bacon, ham, salami, hot dogs and chorizo all count.
Instead: Fish, eggs or legumes in two of the meals a week where processed meat currently appears.
- 02Alcohol — Group 1 (carcinogenic to humans)
Linked to cancers of the mouth, throat, oesophagus, liver, colon and breast. Risk rises with amount, and there is no established threshold below which it disappears.
Instead: Drink-free days do more here than reducing volume on drinking days.
- 03Red meat — Group 2A (probably carcinogenic)
Evidence is weaker than for processed meat. Guidance suggests limiting red meat rather than eliminating it.
Instead: Keep it, reduce frequency — poultry, fish or pulses on the other days.
- 04Very hot drinks above 65 °C — Group 2A
Associated with oesophageal cancer. The temperature is the issue, not the coffee or tea itself.
Instead: Wait a few minutes. That's the whole intervention.
Low fibre and low fruit-and-vegetable intake sit on the other side of the same evidence base: both are associated with higher colorectal cancer rates. These are population-level associations, never a prediction about you.
